Animai-no-bi (Ambiguous Beauty)
1995
Paulownia, paper and ink
Yasumasa Morimura is an appropriation artist and has borrowed images from artists from Manet and Rembrandt to Cindy Sherman and Frida Kahlo as a way to explore issues of identity, gender, politics, and art history. For this work, Morimura photographed himself as Marilyn Monroe in her first Playboy pin-up, complete with wig and fake breasts. The reverse side of the fan shows the Japanese character for "love." The fan is packaged in a box made from Paulownia, a particular type of wood historically used by the Japanese for the presentation of formal fans.

III (Three Wishbones in A Wood Box)
1994
wood box, felt, ceramic, rubber, bronze
box: 2 1/4in. x 13 3/4in. x 5 1/2in.
3 wishbones (same dimensions), 1 each made of ceramic, rubber and bronze; Norton Family Christmas Edition of 5,000; Lorna Simpson is best known for her photography, which often combines images of black women with text as a way to explore society's relationship with race, sex, and ethnicity. In this work, Simpson centers on the wishbone, a key of her artistic imagery. Drawing on the metaphorical meanings of the project's materials, Simpson used III as both an examination of and meditation on wishing. The set includes a wooden box filled with three contrasting wishbones, or "wishes," made from bronze, ceramic, and rubber. The bronze and rubber wishbones are unbreakably rigid. The ceramic wishbone was designed to be fragile, which was the artist's intention.

Untitled
1934
Watercolor on paper
frame: 20 x 16 3/8 in.
Born in 1918, Charles White was a painter with important contributions to the Harlem Renaissance and Social Realism periods in America. Much of his work focuses on the African American experience, rendered through nonviolent images in a time of mounting racial injustices and tensions. He was well known for his murals and his social activism. White’s Untitled watercolor from his 1934 sketchbook in the collection of the AD&A Museum demonstrates his nuanced yet colorful approach to his work. In 1938, White was hired by the Illinois Art Project a state affiliate of the Works Progress Administration. His work received extended showings at the Chicago Coliseum during the Exhibition of the Art of the American Negro which was part of an exposition commemorating the 75th anniversary of Thirteenth Amendment ending slavery. White is best known for the mural illustrating The Contribution of the Negro to Democracy in America installed at Hampton University, a private historically black university in Hampton, Virginia. Painted in 1943, the egg tempera mural covers an 18 foot by 12 foot space on the walls of Clarke Hall and is a celebration of African American historical figures and also highlights the black community’s struggle for equality in all facets of life. These include but are not limited to Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, and George Washington Carver.

Santa Monica Canyon, View to the South
1988
watercolor on paper
frame: 24 3/4 x 32 3/4 in; image: 20 x 28 in.
“During the twenty-five years I have been painting the Southern California landscape I have returned again and again to certain intersections. Sometimes these have been literal intersections like the crossing of the highway and the interstate. But sometimes they’ve been metaphoric or thematic, like the twining of the natural with the man-made that occurs at the edge of the city….Where I want to be is the place where the present day landscape of mini-malls, utility poles and street signs transects our nineteenth-century notion of a view.”

Oblique Strategies: One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas
1996
Corian box with 100 printed cards
1 7/8 x 6 x 5 1/8"
In 1975, theBritish musician, producer, and visual artist, Brian Eno, together with the late English painter Peter Schmidt, addressed the challenge of breaking out of creative roadblocks by writing a series of phrases they dubbed "worthwhile dilemmas." These phrases, which suggest approaches from another direction, became known as Oblique Strategies. Originally published as a deck of cards in an austere format, they became an underground hit and sold out in three revised editions and were part of the Norton Christmas Gift. In 1996, as the Strategies were long out of print, Mr. Norton suggested to Eno a "fourth, yet again revised, and more universal edition." Norton edited the newly revised phrases and commissioned their translation into the six languages collectively spoken (English, Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic). Artist Pae White was commissioned to turn the cards' plain black-and-white format into an extravagantly colored format and housed in a Corian® container that is known separately as "Bill's Bad Bone." These strategy cards have found widespread use in dozens of countries, at writers' desks, in artists' studios, and even in boardrooms.

Salt and Pepper Shakers
2007
Mixed media
4 1/8 x 4 x 2 1/4" BOX WITH SHAKERS
Beginning in 1988, the Norton Family sent a limited edition Christmas gift to a wide list of friends in the art community including art institutions. Commissioned by an artist, the gift encompassed a variety of multi-media artworks including a porcelain ashtray, a printed fan, a woven blanket, a lifesaver, a dollhouse and a crazy coffee cup all of which later became a part of the Norton Family Art Projets. Housing a salt (a) and pepper (b) shaker, enclosed in a polka dot printed box (c), Katchadourian's objects represent the artist's ability to merge common place items within a different construct; the tiny spectacles of the salt shaker become a snow dome while the pepper becomes a repesentation of pollution, debris and ashes when turned upside. Both are housed in a carboard box decorated in polka dots.

Beginning in 1988, the Norton Family sent a limited edition Christmas gift to a wide list of friends in the art community including art institutions. Commissioned by an artist, the gift encompassed a variety of multi-media artworks including a porcelain ashtray, a printed fan, a woven blanket, a lifesaver, a dollhouse and a crazy coffee cup all of which later became part of the Norton Family Art Projets. Humaliwo Chambers' offset lithographs are organized into portfolios (a-c) the images are designed to be viewed through a freestanding stereoscope located atop a wooden stand (d;e) and depict a series of interconnected underground spaces, entered through a portal on a hillside in Malibu, California. The various rooms, passageways, and the objects found evoke conflicting themes from European, Latin American and Indigenous forms and histories. (Humaliwo is the Chumash word from which Malibu is derived, and can be translated as "where the waves crash loudly.") While drawing from the traditions of archeological photography, the images are handcrafted in the artist's studio and reflect meditation of 10,000 years of California history. A Pez dispenser was included in honor of Pez Founder Curtis Allina's passing.

Beginning in 1988, the Norton Family sent a limited edition Christmas gift to a wide list of friends in the art community including art institutions. Commissioned by an artist, the gift encompassed a variety of multi-media artworks such as a porcelain ashtray, a printed fan, a woven blanket, a lifesaver, a dollhouse and a crazy coffee cup all of which later became part of the Norton Family Art Projects. The spiral as a conceptual archetype is a recurring theme in the work of the American artist Peter Coffin, such as in his 2006 commission for Peter Nortons annual Christmas gift. Taking the format of a common photograph album, Coffin organized a series of postcards depicting rainbows into a three-dimensional spiral forming one enormous rainbow. As you open the volume, the constellation of cards expands in an upward swirl of color and form.

Teacup
Glazed porcelain and stainless steel
4 x 7 3/4 x 6" OVERALL
2003
Beginning in 1988, the Norton Family sent a limited edition Christmas gift to a wide list of friends in the art community including art institutions. Commissioned by an artist, the gift encompassed a variety of multi-media artworks such as a porcelain ashtray, a printed fan, a woven blanket, a lifesaver, a dollhouse and a crazy coffee cup all of which later became part of the Norton Family Art Projects. In 2003, Lazzarini presents Teacup (with spoon and saucer) common household objects but thru manipulation of the media warps them into unlikely shapes. And at the same he incorporates common symbols of consumerism such as the MADE IN CHINA stamp on the underside of the cup and saucer. But he also put a chip in the rim of the cup suggesting its commonality although warpped; (a) Teacup; (b) Saucer; (c) (Spoon); on underside of cup and saucer -MADE IN CHINA stamp with Peter Norton Family Christmas Project; N1230.
