ceramic with partial glaze
4 3/4 x 14 1/2 x 3 1/4"
Ceramic brick with ears extending from left and right. Brick is partially glazed with the word BRICK inscribed at center with W and Z.
Erwin Bechtold’s Untitled lithograph draws attention to the act of making a basic shape and its variations. A shadowy gray capsule set against a grid background is mirrored by a hazily outlined red capsule placed below it. The grid system itself consists of regularly spaced horizontally and vertically crossed lines that provide regularity when laying out forms. In drawing and painting, the grid enables designs to be enlarged or transferred easily. In Bechtold's words, "Our existence is like a ball being batted about by controlled disorder on a playing field of uncontrolled order. My pictures are an attempt to express this complex and unfathomable mystery via the medium of art."
In this early canvas, Santa Barbara-based Richard Dunlap sets several parameters to make his composition: he limits himself to two primary colors (blue and yellow) and he applies the paint with a roller. The results, however, are far from rigid, because Dunlap also thins the pigments in clear acrylic base and modifies the roller so the paint adheres in slightly irregular patterns. The result is an unexpected wavering field of green tones which moves beyond its compositional limitations to achieve a quality of freedom and expression.

Description
Portrait of Curt Valentin
lithograph 18/30
21 1/2 x 17 1/2 in.
Curt Valentin immigrated to the United States in 1937 from Hamburg, Germany and settled in New York City. He opened a gallery notable for mounting influential exhibitions of work by modern artists including Andre Masson who made this portrait. He also showed the work of Paul Klee, Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann and Jean Arp, who contributed to Aux Nourritures Terrestres, on view in this gallery.
Joan Mitchell had an abiding interest in poetry and contemporary writing. This drawing belongs to a body of work in which she joined her pastel abstractions with typed poetry by writers James Shuyler and J.J. Mitchell. The composition is signed by both the artist and the writer. J.J. Mitchell, an active member of the East Village scene, was no relation to the painter. The two were likely introduced through their mutual friend Frank O’Hara, another author with whom Joan Mitchell collaborated.
