The Ala Story Print Collection
Description
An account of the resource
Ala Story was the second director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, having had enjoyed a successful career as a gallerist in England and then as director of the American British Art Center in New York in the late 1930s. The Ala Story Print Collection was established initially by Ms. Story as a collection of forty prints dating from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries and celebrated its opening reception on March 9. 1967. Friends and associates continued to donate works to the collection in Ms. Story’s name in order that they be made available for study at AD&A Museum. Thus, the Ala Story Print Collection, with more than 190 prints spanning five hundred years of art history, truly embodies the spirit of community support and stewardship instrumental to the establishment of AD&A Museum.
Physical Object

The Prodigal Son Among the Swine
etching
8 x 11 3/4 in
After leaving home with money from his father and then squandering it, the Prodigal Son is not only starving but is reduced to tending foul pigs for a farmer. Pietro Testa chose to depict the son at the moment he realizes how foolishly he has behaved and decides to return home. As recounted in the Bible, he declares that he will beg forgiveness from God and implore his father to make me as one of thy hired servants(because I am) no more worthy to be called thy son. The father, however, welcomes his son back rejoicing, my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. (Book of Luke, 15, 19 and 24)

Apollo and Daphne
engraving
7 x 9" SHEET
Engraving of Eros tormenting Apollo, the Greek god of the sun and the arts, Eros, the god of love, shoots him with one of his golden-tipped arrows, filling Apollo with unbridled passion for the nymph Daphne. Eros also struck Daphne but with a lead-tipped arrow which made her spurn Apollos advances. Daphne, in the midst of being hotly pursued by Apollo, begs her father, a river god, Open the earth to enclose me, or change my form, which has brought me into this danger! Hearing her plea, Daphnes father transforms her into a laurel tree as Apollo looks on in surprise. Knowing he can never Daphne as his wife, Apollo adopts the laurel as his sacred tree.
