Description
An account of the resource
<em><span>Entry of M. de Couvonage and M. de Chalabre, from The Combat at the Barrier</span></em>
Etching
3 x 6 1/4" SHEET
<p>Jacques Callot was a master Baroque printmaker and draftsman gaining extensive experience in festival publication during his service with the Medici of Florence, ca. 1612—1620. In 1621, Callot returned to his home in Nancy, and several years later, was commissioned by the Courts of Lorraine, France and Spain as a master printmaker. In 1627, he was tasked with the recording, staging and design of the major festivel <em>Le Combat à la Barrière </em>in honor of the Duchess of Chevreuse, a favorite of the Duke Of Lorraine, Charles IV. The festival included various participants arriving on elaborate floats and staging a battle scene with the victory going to the Duke, and his cousin, the Marques de Moy.</p>
<p>Callot produced a series of prints of the event which were later combined with poetry written by Henry Humbert into a publication documenting the festival. The ADA&M’s etching proved too small for inclusion in the publication and was printed in reverse; instead, it was distributed as a souvenir for festival participants and attendees.</p>

<em>Joseph Telling His Dream</em>
etching (re-strike)
5 x 3 7/8 in
Gesturing expressively, Joseph is shown relaying his dream that one day he will rule and others will bow to him. His brothers act out a variety of responses, from wonder to anger and suspicion. While the small etching is rich with fine detail, much has been obscured and darkened through centuries of wear to its plate. In the earlier impression of the same plate from Westmonts Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, also on view, note how features of the turbaned figure standing behind Joseph are still distinguishable beneath the shadow cast on his face. As you compare the two prints, see if you can observe other passages of engraving that have become illegible after numerous restrikes.

<em>Self-Portrait with Velvet Cap and Plume</em>
etching (re-strike)
6 1/2 x 5 in
This self-portrait is one of many by Rembrandt in which the artist represents himself in the dignified, fanciful dress of a wealthy artist. The first clue that this print is not in fact a lifetime impression is the unusual, purple-colored paper used, which dates from the late nineteenth century, and due to its flimsy quality, has cracked, rather than torn. This print is not a restrike, but rather a photographic reproduction of one: note the differences between this image and the others displayed, all of which have been produced through the technique of etching.

<em>Clement de Jonghe</em>
etching (re-strike)
6 3/4 x 8 in
This etching is a restrike of Rembrandts sixth and final state of his portrait of the print dealer Clement de Jonghe. The sixth state was reprinted numerous times and can be found with a variety of watermarks in different collections. In the later states of the etching, Rembrandt adds stippling to the figures right side, increasing the shading and volume to his face and cloak. Note the particularly clumsy passages of dark shadows on de Jonghes face. This indicates that the plate has been extensively re-worked by a later hand and was extremely worn when this impression was made. Clement de Jonghe, an Amsterdam print dealer, collected Rembrandts original copper plates, which thereafter were owned by the merchant Pieter de Haan in the eighteenth century, and were used to produce restrikes such as those displayed here.

<em>Landscape with a Cottage and Large Tree</em>
etching (re-strike)
5 x 12 1/2 in
Rembrandt produced only one state of this etching. In this restrike a number of changes made by later hands are evident. This is likely a copy, as it has been horizontally reversed. Lifetime impressions of this countryside landscape lack the dark shadows that have since been added in the tree on the left side of the composition, as well as other tonal manipulations across the plate.

<em>Jan Lutma</em>
etching (re-strike)
6 3/4 x 8 3/4 in
This third state of Rembrandts etched portrait of the Amsterdam silversmith, Jan Lutma, is a restrike, executed in the late nineteenth century from a plate in the possession of Parisian publisher Henri-Louis Basan. After Rembrandts death, the third and final state of the etching was heavily re-worked by the Polish etcher Michael Plonski, who later sold it to Basan. As you look at Lutmas portrait, observe Plonskis later changes: hatching has been added to repair the drypoint and to enhance the appearance of texture where the plate had worn down.

<em>Horatius Cocles Defending the Bridge</em>
1586
engraving
14 5/8 x 9 3/8"
Horatius Cocles was a Roman soldier whose story of bravery and strength was recounted in Ab Urbe Condita, Livys saga of the early history of the Roman empire. According to Livy, Cocles singlehandedly held off Etruscan soldiers who attempted to cross the Tiber River and invade Rome. Cocles stood at one end of the bridge to meet the advancing Etruscans and ordered the remaining Roman soldiers to destroy the bridge behind him. In the lower right corner remnants of the destroyed bridge can be seen along with Cocles in action. Upon the bridges destruction, Cocles dramatically dove into the water, as spears flew about him, and swam to the Roman side of the river where he was hailed as a hero and given a large plot of land in gratitude for his bravery.

<em>La Conclusion de la Paix</em>
18th c.
Engraving after a painting
17 3/4 x 13 1/2"
Artists Jean Marc Nattier and his brother Jean Baptiste Nattier inherited from their father Marc Nattier a royal license to reproduce Rubens’s twenty-four monumental paintings depicting Marie de’ Medici’s life that previously decorated the Luxembourg Palace (now housed in the Louvre Museum). The project was a great undertaking that involved both brothers as draughtsman, and the most prominent French engravers of the time, including Bernard Picart. In 1710 the prints were issued under the title Galerie du Palais du Luxembourg. The engraving of Rubens’s The Conclusion of Peace in Angers on 10 August 1620 is an allegory on the truce between Marie de’ Medici and her son Louis XIII after the defeat of her rebellion. Mercury leads the queen, encouraged by Innocence in red, up to a temple. The figure of Peace, dressed in white and holding a torch, burns the weapons of war as she confronts the Vices of Blind Fury, Envy, and Fraud.

The Flight Into Egypt: Crossing a Brook
1654
Etching and drypoint, B.55, H. 276
3 3/4 x 5 3/4" SHEET
Unlike the other Rembrandt prints in the Museum collection, this is a lifetime impression. Consequently, this print is identified with the following notations: B.55, H.276 which correspond to catalog numbers in two distinct surveys of Rembrandts prints. These catalogs list the hundreds of prints the artist made, noting the different states of each. Scholars use these compendiums to identify whether prints are lifetime impressions, which state a print might be, or if they are restrikes. B is an abbreviation for Johann Adam Bernhard Ritter von Bartsch (17571821) an Austrian scholar and printmaker who put together a catalog of old Master prints. H is a reference to Friedrich Wilhelm Hollstein (18801957) a leading dealer in prints and drawings in Berlin and Amsterdam. During his life he compiled nineteen volumes on Dutch, Flemish and German prints. His work was so comprehensive it became, and remains, the standard for identification of many prints today.
