<em>Net bag (Bilumi)</em>
Fiber and natural pigment
8" w
20th C.
String bags (bilum) such as this one are commonly made in Papua New Guinea by means of a knotless crocheting technique, a process akin to the construction of local fishing nets and knitted hats. Serving many functions, these hammock-like cradles are regularly slung across the wearers forehead, and are used to carry foodstuffs, store belongings at home, and port newborns. Women customarily exchange these items as gifts during special occasions. While this example has been created using plant fibers and natural dyes, contemporary examples tend to be comprised of colorful acrylic yarn or synthetic nylon with letters or phrases incorporated into the design.

<em>Armlet,</em> 20TH c.
Woven fibers, twine, teeth, shells, pigment
8 h. x 3" dia. OVERALL
Though the exact origin and intended presentation of this armlet is unknown, it is clear that its maker took great care in constructing a frame meant to support the woven fibers that comprise the main band. The armlet has been further enhanced with red pigment as well as shells and pigs tusks or dogs teeth. Intended to demonstrate the wearers status, this elaborate adornment may have been worn routinely or for special ceremonial occasions.

<em>Mask</em>, 20TH Century
Bone, fiber, cassowary feathers
16 x 16 x 2 1/2 in.
The Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea (PNG) is known for its diverse masking forms and techniques. Though the function of this mask is unknown, its small size indicates it may have been designed to attach to a larger costume or was possibly handheld and danced during celebratory rituals or even displayed on special occasions in honor of the ancestors. The feathers lining the intricately woven fiber support are from the cassowary, a flightless bird native to the rainforests of PNG, and a creature featured in their origin stories.

<em>Yam Mask</em>
woven reeds, plaited basketry, pigment
10 x 4 1/2 x 4 1/4 in.
This yam mask comes from the Abelam culture, an agrarian society residing in the tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea. Composed of woven reeds and coated in pigments associated with death and vitality, masks like this would be displayed during ceremonial occasions in observation of the annual harvest. During these festivities men compete to determine who can grow the largest yam, indicating a successful crop return. The greatest yam of all receives this special mask type, which are created to honor the life-giving food staple and are not meant for human adornment. In Melanesia yams are regarded as sacreda living embodiment of the ancestors, that require reverence and proper supplication.
