We Are All Players
Mixed media
18 x 8 1/2 x 7" OVERALL
The assemblage is constructed inside of a four-legged box that has been turned upside down. The interior is lined with collaged maps. A small globe on a stick holds a playing card, and the black head of a small creature, undefinable, gazing in an opposite directions. A cutout of a fish on a small stand is at the bottom of the box. Prince Albert
Mixed media
13 x 11 x 5" OVERALL
The assemblage is constructed out of a box with a hinged cover. The edges of the exterior cover are covered in thorn. The interior cover is gray, and in the center is a circular transparent orb, the inside of which holds a small figure seemingly suspended in its interior. The interior of the box is rimmed with the same thorny edges. A decorated tin of Prince Albert tobacco is positioned off-center to the left. Below the tobacco tin is a small vignette of a girl in overalls holding a pail approaching the cage of an overized bird. Cacti cutouts are along the edges of the interior. Signed and dated on the backside.

Looking for Crystals
Mixed media
21 x 12 1/2 x 4 1/4" OVERALL
Lowry utilizes doll parts mixed withe machine parts in this assemblage. The composite figure approaches a viewing station against a deep blue background the color of a night sky. The disk on the back wall is partially covered in a constellation chart. The assemblage is particularly effective because of Lowry's use of bold colors; in this case, red, yellow, and blue. Signed and dated on the backside.

Monkey Mind
Assemblage
28 x 21" OVERALL
The interior of this elaborately constructed and painted assemblage is dense. An arm constructed of wood and fabric hangs attached to a wire; the hand clutches a small bag with the image of a monkey on the side. The creature regards another small, sculpted monkey that is placed on the bottom edge of the box. A small doll with a white face is suspended in the interior, hands clutching the same wire as that supporting the arm. A silhouetted cutout of a woman is in the top left section of the box. Signed and dated on the reverse.

The Bible Belt
Mixed Media
20 1/4 x 20" FRAMED
This mixed media work is from a series completed by the artist about a violent neighborhood tragedy. The panels are gilded, and the decorative elements are festive, but the message suggests otherwise. Next to the face of a young person are the words: "Ambush 5 shot." In and among the decorative elements is more text, that read: "THINGS JUST DON'T HAPPEN IN A PLACE LIKE THIS." Unsigned.

Journal #93 (Living A New Normal)
Collage
15 x 20" MATTED
This journal page was completed one month after the attacks of 9/11. In it, Lowry uses 1950's advertising images of children in contrast to the horrors of that current moment. A boy and a girl reading is contrasted with four figures in hazmat suits on the left, and on the right a child's "toy" called a potato gun that shoots harmless potato pellets, collaged with renderings of explosions, and a clipped headline that reads "How Scared Should You Be?" Signed and dated below collage on mat.

Files from Looseleaf Services, The Watcher Files Project
2013-14
Mixed media
4 1/2 x 23 x 22" OVERALL
Garrick Imatanis work centers on issues related to archival exploration, artistic collaboration, and placemaking (an approach that considers the planning, design, and layout of public space in relation to the community). This mixed media work includes the files from the Looseleaf Services: (a) cardboard box entitled Looseleaf Services; (b) So He Raised His Hand, (documents) by Inge Bruggeman; (c) 12 stencils with description, designed by Katherine Ball. The Watcher File Project investigates and interprets, in various ways, records amassed by the Portland Police Bureau on 301 activist groups operating in the city between the 1960s through the 1980s. Such groups were under routine surveillance until an Oregon law was passed prohibiting the authorities from spying on factions not officially under criminal investigation. Imatanis participation in the exhibition is represented by Looseleaf Services, which consists of two major components: a filing cabinet holding various records reproduced as metal inserts, and a cardboard binder that sits atop the cabinet holding a publication subscription. For $40 a year subscribers receive primary and secondary source documents-addenda & errata-all punched with holes to slip into the binder. Additional materials that are sent to subscribers include artwork, poetry, essays, and small objects made by collaborators that relate to the materials within the files. All the materials including the filing cabinet are meant to be handled by visitors. By researching and making this information available, Imatani hopes to preserve the history of these activist groups as well as highlight the history of their surveillance.

Okie
oil on canvas
10 3/4 x 11 13/16 x 1 1/2 in. framed
Image is completed in the style of an orange crate label and based on a photo by Dorothea Lange. These paintings by Ben Sakoguchi are part of the artist’s Orange Crate Label series. They mimic the brightly colored labels that were found on wooden produce cartons from the 1880s–1950s. To invoke the inspiration of these paintings, he even prefers they be installed in a vertical line as though stacked crates. Sakoguchi’s works relate to historical and current issues and events, depicting infamous characters or abuses of power. “When I paint with these labels,” he says, “it’s disarming, no matter the subject. People don’t want to be lectured about politics or race, so I use images and colors that soften the blow.” In this selection, Sakoguchi shows violent Chilean dictator August Pinochet and Gen. John L. DeWitt who, during WWII, advocated for and organized Japanese internment camps into which Sakoguchi and his family were forcibly relocated. Another shows the US Air Force stationed in a Thai base which was used as a launching pad for hundreds of bombing raids in Northern Vietnam.
