<text>Mark di Suvero is internationally known for his monumental, outdoor sculptures. His sculptural compositions emphasize the balance and intersection of competing linear forms and employ sharp angular lines, curving cores, and teetering elements that often allow for rotating or swinging movements. The sculpture on view here is comprised of two parts. The upper portion is perfectly balanced on the vertical support, resting in a slight indentation in the steel and held in place by its own weight. This work recalls the beam-like constructions and the anticipatory momentum found in his large-scale sculptural projects.</text>

                <text>
Los Angeles-based artist Ruben Ochoa draws from the realm of construction and infrastructure, sourcing mass-produced products from home improvement stores or salvaging them from urban spaces. His sculptures, assembled from rebar, metal plates, wooden pallets, concrete blocks, road barriers, dirt, and other utilitarian components, range from room-filling structures to two-dimensional works, while others rest airily upon their pedestals.

In Steel Life Porcelana, a bundle of white rebar, bound together by thin wire, rests diagonally across a cement block. Their color is peculiar: a stark, matte white. In every other respect, they seem ordinary. Such materials could be found on a construction site, or amid the debris of a home renovation. Surprisingly, however, the rebar’s pristine white is not painted on but inherent to the material itself. Its texture and form are replicated with uncanny accuracy in porcelain—a far more fragile and fine substrate. Here, the hard and unyielding meets the brittle and light, as Ochoa prompts us to reflect on the constituent materials of our built environment and the ways they are employed to shape society.

                  <text>Ruth S. Schaffner (1914-1996) was a photojournalist and filmmaker, collector and patron, and art dealer whose galleries in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles introduced many vanguard contemporary artists to southern California, including Robert Therrien, John McCracken, and Larry Bell. Due to Schaffner’s generous gifts of more than one-hundred works of art, the AD&A Museum makes available to its visitors a significant holding of contemporary art with a strong nucleus in works from the mid-1960s and 1970s when Minimalism, Pop, and Conceptual artists effected a rupture in traditional forms. The Schaffner Collection includes works from Judy Chicago, Larry Rivers, Joan Mitchell, and Joseph Beuys. Ruth Schaffner’s gifts exemplify the legacy of support the AD&A Museum has received from the Santa Barbara arts establishment and stand as an example of the community’s vibrant contribution in enriching and enlivening our teaching museum.</text>
