Mouse oracle
n.d.
Wood, carved
60 x 20 x 23 1/2" OVERALL
Carved wood "mouse oracle" with a single seated figure positioned on lid. Inside this receptacle, a device composed of sticks records the movements of mice as signs that reveal insights into matters of importance. Mouse divination is probably of Guro origin and is one of several divination techniques used in Baule society; it is practiced in eastern and central Ce d'Ivoire by Agni-speaking peoples, which include the Guro and Yaure. Regional oral traditions recount that in the distant past mice could speak. At that time they lived in the forest with the earth spirits (asye usu) until a spiritual specialist carried them into the village to be kept in captivity. Their natural proximity to the earth's surface and their ability to burrow beneath it permit mice to gain intimate access to the omniscient asye usu and the ancestors, thus enabling them to foretell events.

Flaring Goblet
450-550 C.E.
Ceramic with polychrome decor
4 x 5 1/4 dia. in.
Nasca flaring goblet with bloody mouth killer whale and rodents. At the time this vessel was made a severe drought was wreaking havoc on the Nasca. Fearful for the survival of their crops the Nasca depicted bloody mouth killer whale, a mythological creature who protected the fields and helped ensure agricultural fertility. Running along the bottom of the vessel are mice. These rodents were both a blessing and a curse as their presence indicated a good harvest. Too many of them, however, could destroy the crops but the Nasca also used the bloody mouth killer whale deity to help control their population.

Double spout and bridge vessel
200 BCE- CE 600
Ceramic
7 1/4 x 4 x 7"
Globular double-spot bottle with trophy heads and step-frets;The Nasca were situated on the southern coast of Peru and lived in a dry, desert-like environment dependent on fresh water run off from the mountains. Their religion was based on harnessing powerful spirits of the sky, earth and ocean to help them prevent the sudden and catacylsimc events, such as earthquakes, flash floods and droughts, which frequently affected them. The vessels in this vitrine represent two symbols associated with promoting a fertile harvest. The double-spouted jar depicts the Masked Mythical Spotted Cat Deity which takes its basic form from the pampas cat, a feline native to the area who helped prevent mice, from despoiling crops. On the vase trophy heads, or the severed heads of enemies killed in battle, are shown in profile lining the rim. Trophy heads were used as offerings to the gods to guarantee agricultural fertility. The dots of red paint decorating this vessel represent drops of blood from the severed heads.

Double Body Vessel with Fish Image
ca. 900 - 1430 CE
Blackware
6 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches
In the absence of a written language, the specific narratives on vessels from the Chimu culture are still a mystery to anthropologists. With that said, they do impart info.

The blackware pot features a fish which makes reference to the important role the sea played in the daily lives of the Chimu. The Humboldt Current which is located off of Peru, supports a rich array of aquatic life that, even then, sustained the Chimu. With such an abundant food source, it is no wonder the Chimu worshipped the ocean and regularly used aquatic life forms for decoration.

Joined Double Vessel with two Figures
ca. 900 - 1430 CE
clay
7 1/4 x 4 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches
In the absence of a written language, the specific narratives on these two vessels from the Chimu culture are still a mystery to anthropologists. With that said, they do impart information about some of the social issues of their day. The terracotta pot refers to the strict social stratification system in Chimu society with the larger and more elaborately dressed figure taking precedent over his smaller counterpart. The two are covered with spondylous (spiny oyster) shells, a highly prized possession, indicating they are of the elite class.

clay vessel with gold luminescent glaze; cylindrical in shape with 4 legs on bottom;Beatrice Wood was a master ceramicist whose works, so seemingly simple, belie a rigor that few modern artists had achieved prior. She was internationally recognized for the beauty of her forms and the startling quality of her lusters. Luster, the glazed surface, is produced through the careful combination of chemicals, which are brushed onto the clay surfaces, and the firing process during which oxygen is reduced for prescribed periods of time. Wood began making ceramics at the age of 40 upon enrolling in an adult education class. She developed recipes for a myriad of lusters which look similar to ancient antique vessels. This similarity in appearance is understandable given the artists life-long interest in folk crafts and her exploration of universal shapes and forms. Historians attribute Woods daring developments in ceramics to her involvement with the Dada movement in the early 1900s, which cultivated an ironic and playful sensibility that encouraged a disavowal of prescribed ideas about art. Indeed this flamboyant artist was often referred to as the Mama of Dada and counted artists such as Marcel Duchamp as good friends. And like Duchamps porcelain urinal, Fountain, Woods works claimed an irrepressible sense of freedom that looked towards the progressive in art

Banded Vessel
Glazed ceramic
12" h. x 5 1/4" dia.
The aesthetic sophistication of Ian McDonald’s ceramic works speak to his conviction that pottery serves both non-functional and utilitarian purposes. Or, as McDonald has described his practice: "…sculptural arrangements are born, in that the difference between the support (pedestal, furniture) and the object (sculpture, accessory) is so small that I just collapse it all together. I don’t really start out thinking functional or non-functional, it’s all happening at once." McDonald’s visual inspiration, which ranges from Amish quilts and Arte Povera to the work of other ceramicists and the California Bauhaus, are sources that can be discerned in the bold and simplified geometric works on display. The forms found in Tall Shade Vessel, Four Level, Banded Vessel, in addition to the mounted Corner Piece, are carefully constructed objects that demonstrate McDonald’s great attention to design. Signed and dated on rim of circular base.
