These images illustrate one of Mellers characteristic working methods. The watercolor sketch on the left - a view of an Italian village seen as if from the bell tower of the local church - is complete in itself, yet it served as a point of departure for further development. The artist photocopied it, then went over the photocopied version with a fine-tipped white or silver marker to create the pattern of roof tiles seen in the image on the right. The result combines the simple forms of the watercolor with the nervous energy of the rapidly moving pen to produce a charming effect, a sense of enchanted possibility - of a hundred interesting sights waiting to be seen, a hundred intriguing encounters waiting to happen - that the picturesque village seems to promise. - Jennifer Lopez
