MELLER, Peter

Description

Girl before Mirror
Meller made many of his images from stamps that he created himself. Between 4,000 and 5,000 of these stamps survive. Most were carved from pieces of plastic, such as draftsmans erasers, but he used a wide range of materials - almost anything that might produce an interesting texture - as can be seen from the sampling of them presented in the exhibition on campus. The prints made from these stamps have a distinctive style, an affectionate parody of ancient Greek vase painting, and constitute an expressive language as beautiful and expressive as it is original. - Montana Flynn
