Highway as Habitat
Description
In 1986, Ulrich Keller, Professor of Photography, the History of Art and Architecture, UCSB, brought the exhibition "Highway as Habitat" to the AD&A Museum. Compiled by Roy Stryker, a sociologist, this series reflects a bygone era from 1943-1955 when Americans had fun on the road. The approximately 140 black and white photographs from the Standard Oil of New Jersey documentary project are broken into genres: Turning Wheels: Types of Vehicles, Digging It: The Constructive Story, Coast to Coast: The Bus Story, Asphalt Landscapes: Various Roads, Along the Line: Various Places, Mainstreet: Various Towns, Fill'er Up: Various Gas Stations, Right On; The Trucking Story, Easy Riding: The Vacation Story, Tall Language: Types of Signs.
