Throughout his career, James Hayward has explored the potential of abstraction through monochromatic painting. These tense and luminous early canvases, which seem to capture and hold light, later give way to textured, physical surfaces which resist illusion. Hayward works with spontaneity and deliberation, as he says, not a mindless intuition, but a fortified one.
