Santa Barbara-native Selden Spaulding studied art at Princeton University before entering service in World War II. After the war, he settled in France where his paintings evolved from representational landscapes to broader abstractions. He returned to Santa Barbara in the mid-1960s, and became active in the social issues of the day even as he continued to paint.
