2 h. x 4" dia. OVERALL
Beginning in 1988, the Norton Family sent a limited edition Christmas gift to a wide list of friends in the art community including art institutions. Commissioned by an artist, the gift encompassed a variety of multi-media artworks incluidng a porcelain ashtray, a printed fan, a woven blanket, a lifesaver, a dollhouse and a crazy coffee cup all of which later became part of the Norton Family Art projects. For Cheshire Smile, Sanford Biggers references the infamous cat from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, who disappears after sharing riddles or koans (Buddhist paradoxes), leaving behind only his bodiless, floating grin. Biggers completed this work which features the light-up smile of the Chesire cat against a plain black background.
