b. United States, 1956
California-based artist Hilary Brace was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1956. She received her BFA in painting from Western Washington State University in 1983, and went on to acquire her MFA in painting from UC Santa Barbara in 1985. Brace is best known for her imaginative cloudscapes, where careful gradients of charcoal on Mylar instill the fantastical scenes with a stunning photographic realness. Through the dramatic interplay of clouds, snow, and mountains, Brace’s artworks push the limits of imagination, often unfolding in unexpected ways as she chooses to forego any overly-complex, premeditated artistic process. Her work has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, and has also featured in group exhibitions across California and the United States. She has been the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the California Arts Council Fellowship, and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for Works on Paper. In 2010, Brace was awarded the Santa Barbara Arts Fund’s Individual Artist Award.
