Description

Basket
4.5 x 6 dia. in.
twined basket from Northwestern California, possibly Yurok. The materials are: willow (Salix sp.) or hazel (Corylus cornuta) warp, conifer (pine or spruce) root weft with half-twist overlaydesigns in: giant chain fern (Woodwardia fimbriata) fibers dyed red-brown with alder bark (Alnus rhombifolia) beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) leaves for the yellowish color (originally nearly white, darkened with age) maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum) stem for black There is extra reinforcing at the rim and the edge of the base, wrapped with beargrass leaves Its in good condition and looks unused so I would guess it was made for sale rather than indigenous use. Its very difficult to judge the age of a basket. Mid-20th century would be a general estimate. -- Jan Timbrook
