"Chris Burden was known for his boundary defying performance art, including his infamous work Trans-Fixed, 1974, in which Burden had himself crucified upon a Volkswagen Bug. This performance and others, such as Shoot, 1971, in which Burden was literally shot at in a gallery setting, dealt with violence and suffering in contemporary culture. These performances pushed both artist and audiences to examine how much responsibility they have to each other in violent situations.
