What Red Lines Can Do
1970
Silkscreen
frame: 39 1/8 x 26 1/2 x 1 1/2 in.
Helen Frankenthaler's What Red Lines Can Do brings up the notion of challenging conformity and structure. This silkscreen image captures the fluidity and spontaneity of an artist's hand and wrist movement even through the controlled, technical process of printmaking. Its vibrant colors reflect a sense of liveliness against a vast white background. Coincidently, the line and color distortions reduce any harsh, rigid angles. Underlying this theme of contrast she also comments on industrialized versus handmade imagery.
