GARDY ARTIGAS, Joan
Description
Metamorphose
1984
lithograph
24 1/4 x 16 1/4"
Abstract composition against a white background with a large black shpe with yellow and red areas spreading outward; large black shape positioned over a blue region in the lower right. Three black triangular shapes are in the bottom center with four black parallel lines. The title of this print refers to the founders of Maeght Gallery in Paris, famed for supporting the work of Modern artists as early as the 1930s. That Gardy-Artigas would choose to honor the couple is not surprising given their importance to art history and his own career. They represented the artist and though they are now deceased the gallery, operated by their children, continues to show his work. In addition to making prints and paintings, Gardy-Artigas is a master ceramicist working with artists such as Picasso, Joan Mirand Georges Braque, helping them to execute some of their most important sculptural projects.
