Description

Composition
1975
etching
9 1/2 x 7"
Image includes a primitive figure set against a brown ground; the figure incorporates several eyed skull-like figures and outspread wings. This hybrid creature characterizes much of the work Lam made throughout his life. He was very influenced by his European training and the friendships he made while there, notably Picasso. Though Lam was imbued with the formal language of his European education and friendships he dealt with personal themes and subjects such as his mixed race heritage, the loss of his first wife and child, and his upbringing in Cuba, a place to which he later returned and where he likely made this piece.
