Description
The Power of Life, 1997
Mixed media
3 7/8 x 6 1/4 x 5 1/4" OVERALL
The Women Beyond Borders Art Collection includes over 900 self styled wooden boxes reflecting on a specific woman's self-identity using a variety of multi-media processes. Foam bricks surround the wooden box and are carved and painted to resemble the texture and appearance of the earth. A variety of yellow flowers blossom from the ground and surround a sunken grave with a gray, burnt tombstone being reclaimed by the soil. The chasm in the center hosts rods of iron and spikes pointing upwards to symbolize how "death is always near by," but "flowers still live and rise above all."
