In 1938, artist Rico LeBrun moved to Santa Barbara after a successful advertising career in New York. He became friends with many artists in the Southern California, including Eugene Berman, Channing Peake, and Howard Warshaw, among others. Although a generation younger than Warshaw, LeBrun shared an abiding friendship with the UC Santa Barbara art professor. Both used expressive draftsmanship to address the intensity of the human condition. In this portrait of his friend, LeBrun achieves a quality of immediacy not only through his drawn mark, but also through the use of collage. LeBrun considered collage an intuitive method in which he could rapidly establish large compositional passages without interruption.
